Neighborhood Outreach Marketing
So you’ve started your business and it’s time to be pro-active about reaching out and getting your customers. That means it’s time for Neighborhood Outreach Marketing (NOM).
Neighborhood Outreach Marketing (NOM) was developed with an understanding of three truths:
-
While word of mouth is still the best form of advertising, the bigger your base, the faster the word of mouth will spread for you.
-
Your base of core customers will typically come from your surrounding or nearby neighborhoods*. And since neighborhoods can be diverse, it’s best to focus on the areas whose residents will be more drawn to your business and have the disposable incomes to spend at your business (your neighborhood target market).
-
Neighborhoods often have unique traffic patterns which may impact the success of local area marketing and need to be accounted for to best optimize your marketing dollar.
NOM uses these truths to optimize your advertising dollar, bringing you outstanding ROI, near immediate results, and budget flexibility. (See cost structure here.)
How It Works
We leverage the postal service’s every door offering as well as enhanced traffic pattern analysis, consulting with you to optimize NOM both for your business and for specific pockets in the neighborhood(s) surrounding your business’ target location. Marketing materials (typically postcards, take-out menus, etc.) are then designed, printed, and delivered to every address in the neighborhood pockets chosen based on our consultations. This consulting and optimization leads to higher response rates from customers with higher potential lifetime values for your business.

Return on Marketing Investment
Brick-and-mortar: Based on typical response rates, in almost every case, if you are a brick-and-mortar location, you can expect to recoup your initial investment with your new customers’ very first visit and realize many times more than your investment when considering the lifetime value of those customers as they repeatedly return. And that’s not even considering the other customers they will inevitably bring in with their word of mouth.
Route or service-based: In the case of service-based businesses such as housekeeping, lawn care, pool maintenance, pest control, etc., considering typical annual billings from one client, a single new account generated from NOM can far exceed your advertising investment. Not only that, but since your new clients will be in the same compact geographical area, your route will be optimized, and you will have less drive time between accounts. We don’t have to explain to you how much drive time presents a significant opportunity cost for you, when you could use that time servicing more clients. Add the cost of gas and vehicle maintenance, and you will not only be increasing revenue, but also lowering your costs with NOM.
(*Note: For service-based businesses it’s generally best if your initial customer core comes from a fairly tight geographical area to lower travel related and other opportunity costs. You can then spread your service area neighborhood by neighborhood from there.)
